For a Portola Valley renovation, addition or replacement home, begin with the land and existing building together. The desired layout is one part of the brief; site access, grading, existing foundations and the information available about the property can influence how a construction scope develops. We coordinate those construction questions with the appropriate design and engineering professionals.
Discuss your Portola Valley project ↗
Ask which reviews belong to your particular site
Portola Valley’s Planning and Building resources distinguish architectural/site review and geologist referrals for certain projects. That makes early discussion with Town staff useful when the scope involves site development, foundations or a larger change to the home. We do not assume a geotechnical report or a particular approval is required for every property.
Prepare for the construction conversation
- Collect surveys, existing structural information and any previous soils or site reports you have.
- Describe access for deliveries and construction equipment, retained landscape and intended grading changes.
- Ask the Town and your design professionals which site and building reviews should be resolved before construction pricing is finalized.
Should we choose the layout before discussing site conditions?
Develop them together. A preferred layout may affect foundations, grading, access or the relationship to the existing house. Bring the ideas you already have, but leave room to review the property information before treating the construction scope as fixed.
